Different brands and individuals(influencers) can collaborate to promote the brands, their products and sometimes their values or stories to reach and show them to a higher audience.

Are they really collaborating for a common goal or getting what they want?

Majority of the times, there is definite collaboration involved, and both parties receive more exposer and traffic to their brand, page, other social media and products. However, in some small cases, some people only aim to benefit themselves, but that is most of the time hard to do and doesn't give any long term growth or audience.

Is there a hierarchy of behaviours? If so, how does this manifest itself?

Some people and accounts have more considerable followers. They have existed for longer, so in some cases, they get the chance for collaboration between 'bigger' named companies and people. Overall though even with lowers followers or people with lower reach still get similar opportunities and now more, and more companies are collaborating with smaller creators as it could mean a more niche, dedicated audience.

The majority of ways that social media collaborations work thought is phones and the internet with a selection of different social media account.

Messaging, email and overall contact apps are vital for contact, and later collaboration to occur. Finally, there is the more traditional way of meeting in offices, cafe and social places for discussions on collaboration and meetings.
